You may laugh about American tourists pretending to be Canadians, but it's very true.
My mom used to work in a shop that sold luggage near the border. She'd fairly regularily have Americans come in and buy Canadian flags for their luggage. Some would pay with American dollars, and others had Texan (or other Southern) accents.
